SAFETY REQUIREMENTS SPECIFICATION FOR THE SAFETY INSTRUMENTED SYSTEM

 

To be in compliance with IEC61511 an SRS must be developed for each Safety Instrumented Function. The quality and accuracy of the SRS is crucial to the success of the SIF design, ensuring the hazards identified in the HAZOP are managed correctly to allow protect against the corporate risk criteria.

 

WHAT IS AN SRS?

The SRS collates numerous pieces of design data into one document, information on required risk reduction targets, trip settings, MTTR, Process Safety Times (PST), operational requirements such as modes of operation, alarm system functionality and override requirements etc. In total there are 64 pieces of information that will be provided by an SRS. An SRS will be developed for each individual SIF and used as part of validation phases of the functional safety life cycle and form a key document at Functional Safety Assessment 1 (FSA1).

Knowing that the majority of incidents are caused by human failure during the specification phase (44%), rather than hardware failure it is vitally important that the SRS is verified and validated ensuring the design engineers are given credible engineering data that need to correctly design and specify the SIF and SIS correctly.

 

WHAT WE DO

Using TUV Certified Functional Safety Engineers we are able to provide the following services:

• Working with client engineers Fulcran are able to pull together the 64 pieces of engineering data required to develop each SRS
• Using our competent engineers and designers we are able to interpret SRS’s to design the safety instrumented systems
• Select the correct sensing element, logic solver and final element and produce the SIL calculations needed to provide the justification ensuring the required risk reduction has been made
• Conduct alarm studies to EMMUA 191
• Provide verification services
• Manage validation testing such as Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
